Welcome to the designer. Here you create the pages in your application, giving them their appearance and functionality.

==Control panel==

On the left hand side of the screen is the control panel. It contains the following:

- '''Administration''' button, this will take you to the administration screen

- '''Application''' dropdown, use this to select the application you want to work on

- '''Page''' dropdown, this will default to the first page alphabetically by page name. Use this to select the page you want to work on

- '''new page''' button, add a new page. Note that page names are used to prefix page resource files such as .css files, and produce the order in the drop down, the page title will be shown to users and is the text in the dropdown

- '''edit page''' button, view and edit the properties of a page. Should you need to, use this to delete a page

- '''undo''' button, undo your most recent actions

- '''redo''' button, reinstate changes after an undo

- '''save page''' button, saves the current page

- '''view page''' button, closes the designer and shows the current page as a running application

- '''Controls''' items, drag these controls out from the control panel to place them in your page

New controls are added by dragging them out of the control panel. Existing controls can be selected with a click and then dragged to new positions. In either case you will see a blue border surrounding the current control and the control properties will appear on the right hand side.

As you drag a control around the page you will see left, right, or down arrows. Releasing the mouse when the left arrow is showing will place the currently selected control to the left of the control in which the arrow appears. A right arrow will place the current control to the right. A down arrow will place the currently selected control within the control in which the down appears.

It is worth noting that note all controls can dragged from their current positions. For example table cells cannot be dragged out of table rows, and table rows cannot be dragged out of their parent tables. Controls like the table cell, and panel can have child controls dragged into them. Controls like buttons and inputs cannot have children.

==Property panel==

Once a control is selected the property panel will appear on the right hand side of the screen.

The first row of buttons consisting of left, up, down, and right arrows is used to navigate around the control structure. As the controls are placed in a hierarchy this is a convenient way of, for example, selecting a child controls parent. This is done by using the up button. The down button will select the first available child control. The left button and right buttons will select the next control which is a peer of the current control. Depending on what control it is, the left button may select a control to the left, or above the current control. The right button may select a control to the right, or below the current control.

The second row of buttons allow you to swap the currently selected control with a peer to the left, add a new control of the same type as the selected control to the left, delete the control, add a new control of the same type as the selected control to the right, swap the currently selected control with a peer to the right.

The '''copy''' button will copy the currently selected control to the clipboard. The '''paste''' button will insert a new control from what was copied.

The top of the '''Properties''' table shows the type of control currently selected. Immediately below that appear the detailed properties available for the current control. These are different depending on the type of control currently selected. The name of the property appears in the left column. In the right column is the value of that property. Some properties, such as a grid's columns, are quite sophisticated. Clicking on the property value can produce a slide-out dialogue in which the property can be specified in detail.

Different types of control also have different events which can be fired based on user activity. For example a button control has a click event, and an input control has a keydown event. The available events appear underneath control property values.

To perform a specific action when a control event fires. Add the new action by selecting it from the "Add action" dropdown. You can specify the details of the action in much the same way as setting the control property values. Actions can be removed from events by using the bin icon.

Finally the '''Styles''' grid presents the style classes available for the control and you can add css styling.

- Save any changes you have made to any of the above features with the '''save''' button. You will see a message "application saved" once this has been successfull.

- The '''Duplicate...''' button allows you to duplicate an existing Rapid application into a new Rapid application. This is useful for creating new versions, or experimenting with possible new features. You will be prompted for the name, title, and description of the application you are about to duplicate the selected application into. As usual only A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, and _ are allowed

- The '''Export''' button allows you to export your Rapid application for backup, or for importing into a different Rapid server. Once you click the button a file called rapid.zip will start to download. It contains all off the files required to import your application.

- Finally you can delete any applications with the '''Delete application''' button

Rapid's killer feature is radically reducing html application development time by providing an easy to user interface where users can build webpages by dragging and dropping. In a large organisation we would expect a scenario where a project manager or business analyst could make changes to an application in front of an end user group, removing the longer process where the requirements are documented, sent to developers, tested separately, and then its several weeks or months before end users see their changes. Rapid gives instant results.
The system works by pre-packaging html into controls. Controls have events, and actions are assigned to control events to be performed when the events fire.
Once you have saved the connection settings, clicking on the connection you have made in the '''Database connection''' list will show the settings for that connection. Here you are able to change any of the settings and use the '''test''' button to test the connection. Use the '''save''' button to make the changes permanent.

==SOA webservices==

Rapid supports '''S'''ervice '''O'''riented '''A'''rchitecture and this tab is used to create and manage SOAP webservices used for SOA.

Finally the settings you have entered can be tested with the '''test''' button before

When retrieving data using a database action you will prompted to select a connection.
- '''Rebuild application pages''' is an experimental feature. Currently, if the html behind any controls is modified each page the control is in needs to be reloaded and saved using the designer. This feature will update all of an application's page html at once.

- Finally you can delete any applications with the '''Delete application''' button

At the top of the administration screen are features with affect your Rapid Server:

- To create a new application use the '''Create...''' button. You will be prompted to enter a name and title for your application with an optional description. The name is used to create a prefix unique to your application which is used for all resource files. It's recommended that the name is as short as possible, but should also include a version number. You'll notice only the characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, and _ are allowed. The title is presented to users. Finally the description is an optional free text field.

- To import a Rapid previously exported Rapid application use the '''Import''' button. You will be prompted to browse to the exported .zip file and specify a name for the imported app. The name must be unique and only the characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, and _ are allowed. Your imported application will assume the new name, but will retain the same title.

- To select a Rapid application to manage in detail use the '''Application''' drop down. Only Rapid applications in which you have the "RapidAdmin" security role will appear. Once you select an application the administration tabs will appear.

- To open the designer to the application you have selected use the '''Design...''' button

- Rapid is highly extendable and you are able to create your own controls, actions, and adapters. Should you modify any of these and wish to reload them into a running Rapid server use the corresponding reload button. Should you modify any controls, or actions you will also have to reload the applications as this will regenerate the application source files, and incorporate your changes.

=Application administration tabs=

Once an application is selected from the '''Application''' dropdown the application administration tabs will become visible. Here you can manage any settings that affect your whole Rapid application.

==General==

- Use the '''Name''' box to change the name of your application. This will regenerate all resource files and change any urls to your application

- Use the '''Title''' box to change the title of your application as it appears to your users

- Use the '''Description''' box to change the description of your application

- Change the default start page with the '''Start page''' dropdown

- Advanced users might like to see the engine generated control and action ids amongst a control's properties in the designer. Use the '''Show control id numbers''' and '''Show action id numbers''' checkboxes to turn this feature on or off.

- '''Rebuild application pages''' is an experimental feature. Currently, if the html behind any controls is modified each page the control is in needs to be reloaded and saved using the designer. This feature will update all of an application's page html at once.

Welcome to the designer. Here you create the pages in your application, giving them their appearance and functionality.

=Control panel=

==Property panel==

Rapid is aimed at data-centric business applications and is Open Source. Without a single line of code end users can take control of their own online business applications and be able to easily, change and extend them, radically reducing the time required to get a change from ideas phase to live.

Rapid's killer feature is radically reducing html application development time by providing an easy to user interface where users can build webpages by dragging and dropping. The intention is to provide a platform that less technical users can create applications with, making things easy for them and putting them in control.

There are several different actions: simple actions can style controls on the current page, or navigate to other pages, more sophisticated actions can fetch data from relational databases or webservices to populate controls. It is also possible to create your own controls and actions.
